2019Oneofthefirsttasksof2019wastocontinue connectingupleversinsidethesignalbox.With leversalreadyconnectedviapointroddingtothe crossoverpointsattherearofthesignalbox,itnowneededthedisc signalsconnecteduptoo.Thesignalmanwasverykeenonthis,sohe didn’thavetoleanoutofthewindowstobeabletoflagtrain movementsoncold,windydays!Inthephotototherightyouwillsee wehaveusedadoublediscsignalwiththelowersignalblankedout. Thisisreadyforanypossibleexpansioninthe future.There are now six levers (out of 125!) in the frame that work, numbered 35 to 40:Lever 35- Up disc signalLever 36 - Currently SpareLever 37 - Crossover pointsLever 38 - Facing point lock (both points)Lever 39 - Down disc signalLever 40 - Token frame releaseThoseleversarebetweentheyellowlinesin the picture to the right.Allthisis,however,onlytemporary.Theleversthatcurrentlycontrolthepointsareatthewrongend(the northend)ofthesignalbox,butbeforewecaninstallthemintheirfinalpositionwehavetoreplace/rebuild themissinginterlockingunderthesouthendoftheleverframe.Thelowerrighthandphotoaboveshows theroddingandcranksbeneaththesouthendfloorreadytobeconnectedtotheleversabove(aswellasa stray broom!).PresumingwegetListedBuildingconsentandwereachthestageofopeningthenorthpartoftheboxasa demonstration area it will be the south end which controls the railway. Theremainingboardingwasremovedfromthedownstairswindowsand allthebrokenpaneswerereglazed.Weoweadebtofgratitudetoour glazing sponsor in nearby Aylesbury - Quickseal UK. Onemajorpieceofrenovationwecarriedoutthisyearwastherearwall upstairswherethetoiletcubiclewasputinsometimeaftertheendof WorldWarII.Whenthetoiletwasinstalledthebuildersreducedthe widthoftheexistingwindowtocaterfortheinternalcubicle.They boardedtheresultantholewithlappedwoodenplanks.Thelowerplanks soonrottedawayandwerereplacedwithasheetofplywoodasseeninthe picturealongside,takenbeforereplacementworkstarted.Itwasthe pipeworknearthetoiletthatfrozeandthenburstcausingallthehistoric waterdamagesowetooktheopportunitytocompletelyrebuildthetoilet andwashbasinareawhilewewerereplacingalltherottenboarding. There remains the cleaning of the brick beneath.Withthesignalboxreallystartingtotakeshapewewereabletohave threeOpenDaysduringtheyeartoproudlyshowoffourwork.Visitors couldseetheimprovementsalreadycarriedoutandwereverysupportiveofourefforts.Weareallunpaid volunteersandit’srewardingforustoseepeopleenjoyinganinsightintorailwayheritageandwewereonly toohappytoexplainsomeofthefeaturesbeingrestoredandoffereddemonstrationsofitemswehadon display.
